A Christmas tree in a cozy room with snow falling outside.

We compared five Decembers of US Google searches (2021–2025) for Mariah Carey's "All I Want for Christmas Is You" with 47 other holiday songs. Each song ran head-to-head with Mariah in the same query. Every modern pop Christmas song lost by a wide margin: Wham!'s "Last Christmas" by 4.7x, Ariana Grande's "Santa Tell Me" by 4x, Michael Bublé's "It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas" by 8.4x and Ed Sheeran's "Merry Christmas" by 29x. The only titles that out-searched Mariah were centuries-old carols and folk standards like "Silent Night", "Jingle Bells" and "Winter Wonderland".

What it means

Holiday playlists recycle the same songs every year. The most-searched pick is rarely the most personal one, and a personalized song built around one person's name and story is the version nobody else has. If you have a hook of your own, an AI song generator can turn it into a full track with vocals in a few minutes.

Method

  • Google search interest, US, web, default 5-year weekly window (Oct 24, 2021–Oct 25, 2026).
  • 12 queries of 5 terms each. Every query includes "all i want for christmas is you" as the anchor, so each song is on the same scale as Mariah.
  • Multiple = Mariah's summed weekly index ÷ the song's summed index, over the weeks from Nov 24 to Dec 31 in each season.
  • The second lens is Google search volume (US, English, exact keyword) for December 2025.
