- Over-index
- a state's index for a genre divided by that genre's mean across the 50 states plus DC.
We mapped five years of US Google searches for 22 music genres to find the genre each state searches most compared with the rest of the country. Regional Mexican corridos dominate the Southwest and West: California, Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, Kansas, Nebraska and Idaho. Afrobeats leads in the East Coast corridor: DC, Maryland, New York, Georgia, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Delaware. DC searches it 5.1x the state average. Gospel owns the Deep South: Mississippi, Alabama, Louisiana, the Carolinas and Kentucky. Country is the top over-index in only four states: Tennessee, West Virginia, Iowa and North Dakota. Some surprises: Hawaii is America's K-pop capital (2.2x), Nevada over-searches punk rock (3.7x, the home of Punk Rock Bowling), Colorado leads EDM, and Oregon leads lo-fi.

What it means
Genre tastes move, but the urge to try one yourself does not. If you have a hook of your own, an AI song generator can turn it into a full track with vocals in a few minutes. For a soundtrack to your own day, an AI music generator can score it to whatever mood you need.
