Attic with old musical instruments in sunlight, symbolizing fading trends.

We tracked worldwide Google search interest for 25 viral songs, dances and sounds since 2008. Among the 15 one-off fads, the median climb from first takeoff to peak took 1 month(s), and the median fad had lost half its peak interest 3 month(s) later. "harlem shake" collapsed fastest; "baby shark" holds on best today at 12% of its peak. Evergreen party songs like the Macarena and "Cha Cha Slide" behave differently: they never fade, they come back every wedding season.

What it means

Viral formats reward speed and a sound people already know. Curious how one of these hits would sound in a different voice? An AI song cover lets you hear it. If you have a hook of your own, an AI song generator can turn it into a full track with vocals in a few minutes.

Method

  • Google search interest, worldwide (all countries), web search, monthly. Each term was queried on its own, so every line is scaled 0–100 to its own peak month. These are shapes, not sizes: they show how each fad rose and faded, not which was bigger.
  • Window: Jan 2008–Sep 2026.
  • Takeoff = first month of the unbroken run of months at ≥10 leading to the peak. Half-life = months from the peak until interest first drops to ≤50. "Now" = Jul–Sep 2026 average.
  • Evergreens and generic phrases ("oh no oh no no no" had steady searches long before its 2020 TikTok peak), Macarena, YMCA, Cha Cha Slide, Cotton Eye Joe, Tequila, Barbie Girl, Rickroll, Nightcore, Dreams) are shown separately because they have no single fad cycle; some peaks are driven by later events (e.g. the 2023 Barbie film).
