- US Google search interest, web search, daily. Window is Sep 1–Dec 31 for each year from 2004 to 2025, giving 22 separate yearly windows.
- Normalization
- each year is indexed 0–100 within its own window. That makes the timing metrics comparable across years.
- Smoothing
- a trailing 7-day average. "Reaches X%" means the first day that average hits X% of the season's maximum 7-day average.
We pulled 22 years of daily US Google search data (2004–2025) for "christmas songs", "christmas music" and Mariah Carey's "All I Want for Christmas Is You". The general Christmas-music season has crept earlier slowly, from about Nov 5 to Nov 1. The Mariah song moved much more. In 2004–08 its searches reached 10% of their December peak around Nov 18. In 2021–25 that happened around Oct 27, about three weeks earlier. On Nov 1, which the "It's time" meme has made Mariah Day, the song now sits at 17.5% of its season peak, up from 0.3% in the mid-2000s.

What it means
Holiday playlists recycle the same songs every year. The most-searched pick is rarely the most personal one, and a personalized song built around one person's name and story is the version nobody else has. If you have a hook of your own, an AI song generator can turn it into a full track with vocals in a few minutes.
