US Google searches for sad music over the past year split by gender in different directions. "Songs to cry to" leans female (139 female per 100 male) and peaks at 25–34. "Depressing songs" leans strongly male (52 per 100) and is the youngest search we tested (average age 28.1). "Sad songs" peaks at 18–24 and leans slightly male (85). "Breakup songs" peaks with 55–64-year-olds. For comparison, "happy songs" leans female (120).

- Google search age and gender data, US, past 12 months (Nov 2025–Oct 2026). Each keyword's top age band = 100, and each keyword's larger gender = 100; "average age" is the index-weighted mean of band midpoints (18–24 … 55–64).
