We gave ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity the same request: recommend 30 music artists I should listen to right now. Then we checked every name against US Google search volume. The assistants agree on just three artists: Kendrick Lamar, Mitski and SZA. Beyond those, each has a personality. ChatGPT and Perplexity lean current-indie (Mk.gee, Fred again.., PinkPantheress), Claude leans classic canon (The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Nina Simone), and Gemini leans '90s alt and shoegaze (Cocteau Twins, Slowdive, Portishead). Only 2 of the 30 most-searched artists in our US pool appear on any list. The median artist across those 30 gets about 1,000,000 searches a month. Taylor Swift (3.35M), Michael Jackson (3.35M), Ariana Grande, Bad Bunny and Sabrina Carpenter are not recommended by any of the four.

What it means
Fame shows up in reads, streams and searches, but it starts with a song. If you have a hook of your own, an AI song generator can turn it into a full track with vocals in a few minutes. For a soundtrack to your own day, an AI music generator can score it to whatever mood you need.
Method
- One run per assistant: ChatGPT (gpt-5.5-2026-04-23), Claude (claude-sonnet-4-6), Gemini (gemini-3.6-flash) and Perplexity (sonar, web search on); the other three ran without web search. Answers capped at 2,000 tokens.
- Prompt (identical): "Recommend 30 music artists I should listen to right now. One artist name per line, no numbering, no commentary."
- Human side: Google search volume, US, English. Average monthly searches over the latest 12 months for the artist name. The pool is the 92 AI-named artists plus 77 of the most-searched current and legacy US artists we pre-listed.
- Excluded from volume comparisons because the name is a common word: Queen, Prince, Future, AURORA, Jungle, The Smile, MUNA, ROSÉ, SAULT, RAYE, Rema, Prospa, Turnstile, Jockstrap.
