Source
Google search interest, US web search, Jun 1–Aug 31 each year.
Setup
one query per year comparing 3–5 contenders, each queried as "title + artist". Contenders were the Billboard Song of the Summer plus summer Hot 100 No. 1s and notable year-end hits; they are our editorial selection.
Metric
each song's share of the summed weekly interest across that year's contenders.

Each year Billboard crowns an official Song of the Summer based on chart performance from June to August. We compared that pick with US Google search interest over the same months, from 2010 to 2025. Billboard's winner was also the most-searched contender in only four summers: "Blurred Lines" (2013), "One Dance" (2016), "Butter" (2021) and "Ordinary" (2025). In the other years, searchers obsessed over something else. "Love the Way You Lie" outsearched "California Gurls" by more than 2.5 to 1 in 2010. Lizzo's "Truth Hurts" doubled the search interest of "Old Town Road" in 2019, the year of its record 19-week run. Jason Aldean's controversy-fuelled "Try That in a Small Town" took 58% of 2023 summer search share against 15% for Billboard's pick, "Last Night".

What it means

Every song on these charts started as a hook someone wrote down. If you have a hook of your own, an AI song generator can turn it into a full track with vocals in a few minutes. For a soundtrack to your own day, an AI music generator can score it to whatever mood you need.
