We searched YouTube US for 21 hits from 1969 to 2026. Official uploads still take #1 for most songs. But for 'Mr. Brightside' the first video is a fan lyric upload (18.6M views), and for 'Golden' it is Sony's official lyric video (1.8B views), not a music video. Lyric videos crowd in right behind the official uploads. A fan-made lyric upload sat in the top two for 11 songs, and 21 of 21 songs had at least one in the top 10. 7clouds alone has a 376M-view lyric video for 'Die With A Smile' and a 203M-view one for 'Ordinary'.

What it means
Viral formats reward speed and a sound people already know. Anyone who wants their own song on screen with the words can put it together with a lyric video maker. Anyone who would rather write lines fans quote for the right reasons can start a first draft with a song lyrics generator.
Method
- YouTube search results, US, English, desktop, top 10 videos (playlists/channels skipped), 21 songs searched as 'title artist'.
- Official = uploaded by the artist's or rights holder's own channel (e.g. Sony Pictures Animation for 'Golden'). Lyric video = 'lyric' in the title. Fan lyric video = lyric video from any other channel.
- Views are YouTube's public view counts as shown in the search results.
