We split Google searches for traditional holiday and birthday songs into local-language titles ('Stille Nacht', 'Las Mañanitas', 'Sto lat') and English ones ('All I Want for Christmas Is You', 'Happy Birthday to You') in 19 non-English-speaking countries. The 'music patriotism' index is the average of the local share in each category. Top five: Colombia (68%), Mexico (62%), Poland (61%), Spain (57%), Chile (56%). Bottom five: Austria (32%), Netherlands (30%), Sweden (30%), Belgium (23%), Indonesia (17%). In 12 of 19 countries English songs get most of the searches.

What it means

Music travels, but language still shapes what people go looking for. Anyone who wants a favorite song in another language can rewrite and sing it with an AI song translator. If you have a hook of your own, an AI song generator can turn it into a full track with vocals in a few minutes.

Method

  • Google search volume, 40 countries (national data, no language filter), monthly Oct 2025–Sep 2026. 'Avg/mo' = mean of those 12 months.
  • Christmas: sum of December 2025 searches for 11 local-language carols vs 47 English holiday songs. Birthday: 12-month average of the top local birthday song vs the larger of 'happy birthday song' / 'happy birthday to you'. Index = mean of the two shares.
  • Only titles in each country's own language(s) count as local (Switzerland: German, French, Italian; Belgium: Dutch, French). 'Feliz Navidad' (bilingual), 'musta kissa' and 'midt om natten' (ambiguous) and close-variant duplicates were excluded. English-speaking countries and those with no own-language title in the panel (Japan, Korea, Turkey, Thailand, Vietnam, Saudi Arabia, Denmark and others) were left out.
  • Close variants share one pooled number.
